Due to a significant increase in demand for on-campus housing, the Department of Residence Life will expand its residence hall space by temporarily converting lounges into two, three, and four person rooms. The information below is intended to help answer your questions regarding your temporary accommodations and explain why it was necessary for us to expand our housing capacity.

- What is expanded housing?
We strive to offer housing to as many students as possible, especially those who are new to campus. However, there is currently a higher than expected number of students requesting housing than we can accommodate. In situations such as these, Residence Life carefully plans for and follows an expanded housing plan. This plan allows us to increase our capacity and enables more students to be part of the on-campus experience. We have identified flex spaces/lounges that can be temporarily converted into two, three, or four person rooms.
- Why was I assigned to expanded housing?
Housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to a significant increase in demand for our residence halls, students who were the last to meet the Preferred Housing Application Deadline of June 7 have been assigned to expanded housing.
- Where are expanded housing located?
Expanded housing spaces are located in first-year halls on Busch Campus, College Avenue Campus, and Cook/Douglass Campus. We have identified spaces in the following halls for expanded housing: Allen (Busch), Mattia (Busch), Metzger (Busch), Lippincott (Cook/Douglass), Nicholas (Cook/Douglass), Voorhees (Cook/Douglass), Campbell (College Avenue), Frelinghuysen (College Avenue), and Hardenbergh (College Avenue).
- How long will I be in expanded housing?
Some students assigned to expanded housing may be moved to a permanent assignment before first-year move-in on August 29. We believe that many students will be moved to a traditional room within the first few days or weeks of the semester, but some may need to be occupied for the entire fall semester.
- What can I expect in expanded housing?
- These spaces are in first-year halls on Busch, College Avenue, and Cook/Douglass campuses, and all of your roommates will be first-year students.
- Expanded housing spaces are lockable, with a full complement of furniture available in any other first-year room, such as a bed, dresser, desk, chair, and micro-fridge for every two people (two in a three-person space). Each student will also have a portable garment rack instead of a wardrobe or closet.
- Expanded housing spaces will either hold two, three, or four first-year residents. While the sizes of the room vary by building, triples are large enough to comfortably accommodate three students and four-person rooms are larger.
- What are the amenities in expanded housing?
All of the same building amenities and furnishings available to students in permanent housing are also available to those students assigned to expanded housing. Access to bathrooms and laundry rooms are the same as for any student assigned to that hall.
While the sizes of spaces vary by building, triples are large enough to comfortably accommodate three students and four-person lounges are even bigger. The spaces are lockable and students will be provided keys with a full complement of furniture like in any other first-year room: bed, dresser, desk, chair, micro-fridge for every two people (two in a three-person lounge). Each student will also have a portable garment rack instead of a wardrobe or closet.

- What social and academic resources are available in expanded housing?
It is our goal to ensure that you have an enjoyable and rewarding on-campus experience. Expanded housing units are assigned to a resident assistant and have access to all of the same amenities and resources available to any student living in our residence halls. All programs and activities targeting the social and academic transition for first-year students, planned by the hall and campus, will be available to all those in expanded housing.
- What is the cost of an expanded housing space?
We understand that this may not have been what you were expecting and could pose an inconvenience. For that, we apologize. While those assigned expanded housing will have access to all the same amenities and resources available to any student in university housing, residents will pay half the daily rate for this room until they are relocated. This prorated amount will be credited to the student account after the reassignment has occurred.
- What is the process to move out of an expanded housing?
Our assignments office will notify you when a permanent reassignment becomes available. Please be advised that residents cannot remain in expanded housing once a traditional space is offered. While room reassignments will only be offered when all students in expanded housing can be moved, it is unlikely that all residents will be moved to the same hall. In an effort to minimize the burden on our residents, moving support will be available if and when a room move occurs.
