French Language & Culture
Students in this vibrant, fun, and engaging environment are exposed to French language and culture through events and activities. If you are interested in learning about French language and culture through a unique experience, then this learning community is for you! This community can also help prepare students for study abroad.
Students will live in Wessels, Leupp, or Pell Halls on the College Avenue Campus, adjacent to downtown New Brunswick theaters, restaurants, student-friendly shopping, and the NJ Transit train station for easy access to NYC and Philadelphia. Wessels Hall, Leupp Hall, and Pell Hall are in the heart of the College Avenue Campus in the scenic Bishop Quad area.
Programming in the past has included:
- A trip to Princeton University for theatrical presentation of La Comedie-Française.
- French Movie Night: “Ne le dis à Personne”
- Attending a performance of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Philip J. Levin Theater
- Participation in French Club Meetings and activities
- Game nights, informal dinners, lunches, and gatherings etc
- In order to participate in an LLC, you must live in the building in which the LLC is located.
- Open to all class years
- At least two years of high school French or equivalent or one semester of college-level French language including 101, 121, 131 and above. Heritage speakers and native speakers may take the French language placement exam to establish proficiency level.
- All LLC members take a 1.5 credit course (taken in fall and spring for total of 3 credits).
LLC Orientation
Make Rutgers home! We’d like you to begin to connect with students, faculty, and staff even before the start of classes. We intend to have an LLC orientation in late August or early September. Students who have been accepted to the community will be provided further information on the LLC orientation date and time.
Students will participate in the following:
Fall and Spring:
- Incoming LLC members take a 1.5 credit French Cultural Experience course (taken in fall and spring for total of 3 credits). 420:297 – The French Culture Experience. This conversation course meets once a week (Tuesday 7:30pm-8:50pm) in Leupp and is a great way to consolidate listening and speaking skills at different levels of proficiency. The 1.5 course may be used as an elective for the minor and major in French, in combination with another 1.5 course (such as 01:420:298, 301, 318). Please do not hesitate to contact professor Pairet if you would like more information on the course.
- Attend French club meeting weekly (encouraged)
- Students are also encouraged to attend synchronous events offered through the Department of French. This community will have increased faculty engagement in lieu of a residential French peer mentor.
