New International Student Move-In

New Undergraduate International Move-In Day begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
International Student Orientation is from Monday, August 26 to Wednesday, August 28, 2024. Learn more about International Student Orientation.

What if I am arriving to campus before August 25, 2024?

Early check-in is not possible due to facilities work and preparation time between the summer session and fall semester housing. Students arriving before Move-In Day generally make temporary arrangements for themselves. The Hyatt and the Heldrich are two hotels that are located near New Brunswick train station.

Before Arriving to Rutgers

You will need your NetID and password to begin the application. Your NetID is composed of numbers and letters, such as 'abc12'. Your RUID is composed of nine numbers, such as "123456789". Placement for first-year students is by first come, first served basis, so the earlier you complete your application, the more likely you will be placed on your campus of choice. Your “place in line” is determined by the date you submit your application. First-year students are able to list their preferred campus, however, they are not able to select to live in specific buildings.

Need to make changes?

You can edit your application as many times as you would like until June 30, 2024.

When will I know my assignment?

Assignment information for first-year incoming students is sent by email in early August.

You may list another incoming student on your housing application as a preferred roommate if you would like to live with them on campus. Some tips for successful roommate preferences:

  • Both of you must complete a housing application and list each other's name and RUID number on your applications. If your applications are not mutual, you will not be placed together.
  • Talk to your potential roommate about their campus preferences and if they are applying to any special interest programs and housing.
    • For example, if you are an Honors College student, and your preferred roommates are not, your program may prevent you from being placed together.
    • If you are applying to the Global Roommate Program, the International Living Learning Community, or another special interest housing option, your preferred roommate must also be applying to the same program in order to be placed together.

Don't have a preferred roommate?

Our assignments office will use your application responses to pair you with another incoming Rutgers student.

For a general list of suggested items to bring, and what not to bring to campus, download our Packing List or visit our Move-In Page. Also be sure to download our Ultimate Guide to Move-In!

As an international student, you should also bring important documents such as:

  • Passport
  • Visa Related Paperwork (I-20/DS-2019, etc.)
  • Admission Letter
  • Financial Documents
  • Emergency Contact Information
  • Health/Immunization Records

For questions and information about entry requirements, please visit Rutgers Global-International Student and Scholar Services. To learn more about immunization requirements, visit our Student Health website.

Linens

Your room on campus will have most of the furniture you need, including a bed and desk. Our spaces do not come with bedding and linens. Please note that twin extra long (XL) sheets are needed to fit most beds in the residence halls. If you would like to order linens that will be ready for you when you arrive on campus, we offer linen and bedding orders via the OCM website.

New Jersey Weather

The temperature in New Brunswick, NJ ranges from around 5 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 degrees Celsius) in the winter to over 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius) in the summer. Rain and snow are common in the fall and winter, and summers can be hot and humid from May through early September. Plan to bring a variety of clothing for all temperatures and weather.

Electronics

Buildings on Rutgers campuses use a standard Type B outlet with grounded 3 pins and 15 A/100-127 V.

Internet Access

Nearly all residence halls and apartments are covered by Rutgers Wireless, which you can connect to by searching for "RU Wireless" or "RUWireless_Secure" in available networks, or using a web browser to navigate to: resnet.rutgers.edu. You will need your NetID and password to connect to the wireless internet. Additionally, all residence hall rooms have an ethernet port that you can physically connect to the internet through an ethernet cable.

Public Transportation

If your flight is scheduled to arrive into Newark Liberty International or JFK International Airport after 10pm at night, we strongly encourage arranging an alternate plan of travel to Rutgers, such as a shuttle service. Time spent with baggage retrieval, customs, and unexpected delays may cause you to miss the last NJ Transit Northeast Corridor Train to New Brunswick. The last train from Penn Station is at 1:22am. The last train from Newark Rail Link is at 1:45am. We do not recommend using a taxi directly from Newark or JFK, as the cost may exceed $100 or more.

The closest airport to Rutgers University–New Brunswick is Newark Liberty International Airport. You can take the Airtrain to the NJ Transit Rail Link, and then take a Trenton bound Northeast Corridor NJ Transit train to New Brunswick train station.

Break Housing

The following first-year buildings are nine-month contracts, which mean that they will stay open during Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Breaks. You do not need to move out or leave your housing during these breaks. However, dining halls will be closed or have limited hours during break periods.

  • College Avenue: Frelinghuysen, Honors College, Tinsley, Stonier (open during Spring Break, but closed during Winter Break).
  • Livingston: Lynton Towers (South), Quad II House 26.
  • Cook/Douglass: New Gibbons.

All apartment style housing options are nine-month contracts unless listed as otherwise. According to the Rutgers Academic Calendar traditional residence halls and suites not listed as nine-month contracts will close during academic recess, meaning all students must leave the building during periods when halls are closed. You may leave your belongings in your space, however, you will not have access to your room during break periods. Click here for more information on rates, billing and contract length. All undergraduate students must move out in May at the end of the academic year.
