Students will benefit from special programs, and having residence life staff assistance in transitioning to Rutgers. This community is designed for students who have an interest in careers in the health and medicine professions prepare for the rigorous academic challenges often experienced as a science major.

This program focuses on assisting students in their transition from high school to college by sharing common first-year courses such as General Biology and First Year Interest Group Seminar on Health and medicine. Students will be supported by a culture of academic excellence and receive academic and personal advice that will help to guide them to be successful during their first year.

NOTE: Some members of the Health and Medicine LLC will be required to enroll in an additional General Biology practice group. These members of the community are expected to prioritize their scheduling around the two weekly General Biology lectures as well as the weekly GB workshop and GB practice group meetings.  After receiving your application, we will determine if you are in need of this additional practice group, based on your placement scores.

After participating in this community as a first-year, students who demonstrate exemplary engagement with the community and their academic endeavors will also have the option to apply to the exclusive Health and Medicine Second-Year Experience to continue in the close-knit supportive environment that the LLC creates. Program Goals: retention, career exploration, and workplace preparation

Through the collaboration of student, staff and faculty, the mission of the program is to create a community and environment that increases your success in meeting the academic rigor of the life science curriculum, and helps you stay on the academic and career pathway towards employment in the Health and Medicine industries.  As a member of the community you will be an active and collaborative participant, dedicated to the academic success of all members of the community.

  • Develop and practice academic and transferable workplace skills
  • Study skills for General Biology that can transfer to other courses such as Calculus and Chemistry
  • Collaboration/Team skills
  • Personal/Time management skills

Programming in this community has included:

  • Introduction to Rutgers University tour and connecting with professors
  • Pre-Medical undergraduate student advice panel on course selection, majors to choose and potential research/volunteering opportunities
  • Undergraduate sciences study skills workshop– A collaborative session with fellow residents in which you get the opportunity to assess your studying habits with peers, and then learn about the critical and efficient techniques many undergraduate science majors use for mastering any and all sciences courses
  • Social events as a community e.g. football games

To be eligible, students must:

  1. Be a first-year student. *Please note that  Nursing students are not eligible for this LLC due to conflicting courses taken in your first year within the Nursing program*
  2. Place into 01:355:101 Expository Writing/College Writing or 01:355:104 College Writing Extended and Precalculus (01:640:111) or higher.
  3. Take placement test ASAP
  4. Complete the supplemental application found here.

LLC Orientation

Make Rutgers home! We’d like you to begin to connect with students, faculty, and staff even before the start of classes. LLC move-in will take place on Tuesday, August 29 and LLC orientation will occur Wednesday, August 30.

As a participant, you will be:

  • Attending community sponsored events and mentoring conversations
  • Registering yourself for specific LLC sections of the following courses in the fall:
    • General Biology
    • First-Year Interest Group Seminar (FIGS) on Health and Medicine
    • NOTE: Some members of the Health and Medicine LLC will be required to enroll in an additional General Biology practice group. These members of the community are expected to prioritize their scheduling around the two weekly General Biology lectures as well as the weekly GB workshop and GB practice group meetings.  After receiving your application, we will determine if you are in need of this additional practice group, based on your placement scores.
  • Registering yourself for specific LLC sections of the following courses in the spring:
    • General Biology II
    • Bio Research Lab

Health and Medicine Second-Year Experience

If you are looking to connect with people who have similar interests within the health and medicine field, while positively contributing to a student’s first-year experience at Rutgers–New Brunswick, you should consider the Health and Medicine Living-Learning Community – Sophomore Year Experience.

  • Engage with like-minded students wishing to focus on the health and medicine field
  • Work with Residence Life staff to create programs in and outside of the hall that matter to you, i.e. service, health and medicine workshops to explore majors, MCAT prep)
  • Regular access to the advice of a Peer Mentor who has experienced much of what you are currently experiencing
  • Informally mentor incoming first-year students
  • Participate in a 1.5 Career Prep for Health and Medicine Course

The community is open to all current Health and Medicine LLC students that have met B.E.S.T. programming requirements.
