Why did you choose to work at Rutgers Residence Life?
“I chose to work in the Rutgers Residence Life Department because I had experience here as an undergraduate resident assistant and it is where I felt at home professionally and personally. While a resident assistant, I fell in love with counseling, group facilitation and psycho-social development as they relate to contemporary college students and I was eager to pursue to these areas academically in the College Student Affairs (CSA) program in the Graduate School of Education. As part of CSA, I was offered employment as a Hall Director at Perry Hall, one of Cook Campus’s first-year residence halls. Research shows that students’ sense of belonging early in their college careers has extraordinary predictive power for their success throughout those years. At Perry, I look to foster as powerful a sense of belonging for my students as I can, where each student feels supported and welcomed and encouraged to discover and pursue their highest goals as students, persons, and citizens, and in turn where those students contribute to that atmosphere for their peers. Opportunities for education are not just offered in the classroom, but at home, in the dormitories, in extra-curricular activities, and I am grateful that I get to play such a part in our students’ education.”
