Opening in the Fall of 2016, Sojourner Truth Apartments are a 14-story, U-shaped university apartment building at the corner of College Avenue and Hamilton Street. Named for abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sojourner Truth, a former slave who was owned as a young girl by the family of Rutgers’ first president Jacob Hardenbergh, College Avenue’s newest residence hall features 135 single-bedroom apartments (up to four bedrooms per unit) on 13 residential floors. The building will house 442 continuing students.
The first floor of the Sojourner Truth Apartments will be home to The Yard, a New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO) multi-use project that will feature communal areas and green spaces, along with a select retailers and restaurants.

The Sojourner Truth Apartments are situated above The Yard, a multi-use project by the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO). Featuring common areas, green spaces, and a video monitor, the Yard will also be home to select retailers and restaurants, including: Bubbleology, honeygrow, RU Hungry, Rutgers Mailroom, Krispy Pizza, Jersey Mike’s, and Starbucks.
Residents of the Sojourner Truth Apartments also live right in the middle of Easton Avenue’s copious dining and shopping opportunities and are close to the New Brunswick train station, academic buildings, and the Barnes and Noble campus bookstore.
