Recent studies indicate that students who reside on campus for the first two years of their academic career maintain higher overall GPAs than students who live off campus, higher levels of social support among their student peers, as well as display increased persistence towards graduation. Recognizing these positive effects, Residence Life began phasing in a Rising Sophomore Housing Guarantee over three years beginning with the 2015-2016 housing selection process. For the 2017-2018 lottery process, all rising sophomores who apply for housing will be guaranteed housing.
The sophomore housing guarantee has been phased in to minimize the impact on any individual class year by gradually increasing the number of on-campus spaces reserved for sophomores.
It is also important to note that the timing of this phased-in approach was aligned with the addition of 1,200 on-campus spaces opened during the past two years. In Fall 2015, 700 additional spaces were made available for the lottery process while 500 additional spaces were opened in Fall 2016. These 1,200 spaces supported the sophomore guarantee policy, while still providing a number of juniors and seniors the opportunity to remain on campus.
