Helping to raise awareness of dating violence and relationship abuse, Residence Life recently sponsored a door decorating contest throughout its 52 on-campus residences as part of Rutgers University’s annual Turn the Campus Purple Week.
Created in 2013 by graduate interns at the Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance (VPVA), Turn the Campus Purple is a way to connect the student body, survivors, advocates, organizations, faculty, and staff to the common purpose of raising awareness and support around dating violence.
From October 9-13, Turn the Campus Purple sponsored events in conjunction with several campus partners culminating in the It’s On Us Rally at the College Avenue Gymnasium featuring former Vice President Joe Biden. Other programs included, SCREAM Theater, Wear Your Purple Day, Chalk the Block, a Candle Light Vigil, and an Ally Week lecture co-sponsored by the Center for Social Justice Education featuring Franchesca Ramsey.
Throughout the week, individuals and departments were encouraged to turn physical and personal spaces purple to connect the university community together as one that will not tolerate violence and abuse.
Doing its part, Residence Life sponsored a door decorating contest for residents in hall, suite, and apartment spaces. Below are a list of this year’s individual door decoration as well last lobby decoration winners.
